Myself - and some questions

Post by harzretro »

Hello,

i'm a Computer Collector from Germany (www.computersammler.de) and i'm preparing a podcast with the theme Sharp MZ 700.
For me, it is a nice looking computer with an ugly system (Sorry to say it, but it is my opinion ;)

I've lots of Sharp Computers,,
like the MZ 80a,80B, 80K, 700,800,3500 - some of them several times.

For this podcast i've some questions:
- which games i should take a look?

Eugea is there something realy interesting ... ;)

- is there any game or demo with GOOD sound?

When you look back: which are the most impressing programms where you cuoldn't believe they exist (sharp mz700 ;)

Do you know why Sharp make a not changeable character table? This 2 / 4 kib of RAM should be awaible ....

Best regards
Axel

- MZ-700 was mainly done for MZ-80 K nostalgia by offering colors and more RAM.
- MZ-800 has CGRAM in 700 mode which allows to reprogram characters
- MZ-1500 has PCG ability which even allows multi-color characters

It seems you haven't MZ-2500 (SuperMZ) in your list.

"Clean computer" concept leads to a minimal system for maximizing the RAM capacity. It also gave the choice between languages: BASIC, FORTH, PASCAL, FORM, etc. or simply assembler. When I code my programs in asm, I don't even use the "ugly system" code in M-ROM.

ST-2 which is a recent game is quite impressive. Look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG0ijYIvdNw.

Good sound? well, it's quite subjective. Look here: https://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?plat ... Sharp%20MZ for demos.

ST-2 looks great for this computer :)

When you know how i got my Sharp Computers you wouldn't believe it ... so i didn't got the 2500 *GGG*

You can use the C64 as 'Clean Computer', too, but that is another story ... ;)

Tomorrow we will record the podcast (in german - it will be longer than 1h only about the sharp mz700.

In your opinion: what is important to tell about this computer?
Why do u like it? :)

Maybe ask the questions on the FB groups, you'll probably get more answers there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sharp8bitmz

That is a shame! Quite frankly, there are probably more members on FB than there are here (which I don't actually think is a good thing!).

As for what I personally like about the MZ-700 is the clean machine design (load whatever language you like - or just get straight into loading a game) and I love what people are able to do within the limitations of the machine. There are some great demos out there for it now with techniques you wouldn't have thought possible. The fixed character set can actually be used to make some great art (a bit like PETSCII). A full 64KB available to the user as well (due to clean machine design).
